Program History
The Youth Development Program (YDP) was originally founded in 1978 under the City's Department of Human Resources. YDP was initially designed to assist youth and their families who were in trouble legally as an alternative service to the court system. It was the first diversion program established in Cuyahoga County and is a forerunner in this area. YDP expanded its services in the mid and late 80's offering additional services to the community including counseling for emotional or behavioral concerns, chemical dependency education and support groups, and parenting programs, etc. Other programs were established in recent years such as the BRIDGE: Building Resiliency with Innovative Drugfree Growth Experiences programming including the Adopt an Officer/Firefighter program. In 2006, Charter revisions established the Division of Youth Services transferring the programs and services for our community's youth to the Department of Public Safety. DYS staff will assist a youth or family to assess their present situation in relation to available community resources and assist in obtaining necessary services.
Referrals
Youth and families are referred to DYS by schools, family members, police, clergy, other agencies, or community members. Referrals are made to other agencies or services when necessary or appropriate. Initial appointments or contacts should be made during regular office hours:
Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Consultation services are free of charge for residents of the City of North Olmsted. Some fees may apply to group programs and fees do apply for the Community Diversion Program.
The Division of Youth Services provides community-based social services for the residents of the City of North Olmsted and is dedicated to helping people help themselves.
