1806 Part of Olmsted Township in the western reserve. 1807 Original survey taken by a man named Lacey who was employed by the Connecticut Land Company. Renamed Plum Creek Township. 1815 Renamed Kingston Township - David Johnson Stearns, the first permanent settler in the northern portion of Olmsted arrived. 1820 Old Native American wigwams still standing in area (Seneca and Wyandot). 1821 Isaac Scales buried in Butternut Ridge Cemetery (first person). 1823 Renamed Lenox Township (became a civil township at that time) initial settlement of Coe Ridge. 1827 First political officers were established. 1829 Elias Frost opened a postal station in his home which he called Frostville (because there was already a post office by the name of Lenox in Ohio). Charles Hyde Olmsted donated 500 books to the town, in return the town adopted the name Olmsted (named after his father, Aaron Olmsted of Hartford, Connecticut, the original business investor). 1830 First election held under the name of Olmsted Township. 1831 Construction began on N.O. Congregational Church on Lorain Road on the land donated by Alvah Stearns. 1835 Butternut Ridge Cemetery established. 1843 Land donated by Coe's for the first Coe School. Native Americans and settlers signed a treaty in Sandusky that stated that the Native Americans would move to land across from the Mississippi River. 1846 First newspaper published in the area - Olmsted Falls titled the "True Democrat". 1847 Universalist Church built at Porter/Lorain/Butternut Ridge Road intersection. It is the oldest church in North Olmsted and was moved to Porter Road in 1963. It was also used as a station in the Underground Railroad. 1852 First building of Butternut School was constructed on Butternut Ridge Road. 1870 E.J. Hyde began serving as justice of the peace for the next thirty years. 1883 A two-story brick building was completed to replace the original Butternut School. 1893 First store built in city for commercial purposes (built at Lorain/Porter/Butternut intersection-still exists today). 1902 First home delivery of mail to North Olmsted residents by U.S. Post Office. 1904 First telephone installed in North Olmsted. 1905 Lorain Road became the first road paved with brick. 1909 Became a village called North Olmsted - because it was the northern most area of the Olmsted Township section of the western reserve. First mayor was George Willet. 1913 Town Hall was erected. 1915 Jacob Flora was elected Marshall of The Village of North Olmsted. Two-cell jail was located in the basement of Town Hall. 1920 Present Butternut Elementary School was completed to replace the original Butternut School. 1921 North Olmsted bus line established with the purchase of two buses. North Olmsted school held the first commencement exercise (24 graduated). 1923 Springvale Ballroom was built by Fred Biddulph on property just off Butternut Ridge Road. North Olmsted Bank opened by George Dewey. 1924 March 4, North Olmsted Fire Department was created by village ordinance and J.T. Neiswinter was appointed the chief. Schrimshaw’s Garage on Lorain Road housed the used Model T Ford fire truck. Village purchased 38 acres of land for North Olmsted Park on which they built the North Olmsted Cabin. 1925 North Olmsted Library opened as a branch of Cuyahoga Community Library, located in a upstairs room on the south-west corner of the Porter/Lorain intersection. 1926 North Olmsted Lumber was incorporated. North Olmsted Fire Department housed their first factory-made fire truck in Beebe and Elliott’s garage on Lorain Road. 1927 North Olmsted Police Department purchased a Henderson motorcycle. 1928 Springvale Golf Course was first plotted. 1929 First auto sales and service agency established on Lorain Road to sell star cars for star six. Coe residence destroyed to make room for the widening of Lorain Road. North Olmsted Hardware was established. Original fire station and office building was constructed on Dover Center Road behind the original Town Hall (still exists today - was used by bus line). 1930 North Olmsted Police Department purchase a Harley Davidson motorcycle. North Olmsted Kiwanis Club chartered. North Olmsted Garden Club originated. 1933 Construction began for pavilion at the North Olmsted Community Cabin. 1947 North Olmsted Police Department purchase a Nash car equipped with an emergency stretcher and a mobile telephone unit. Radio telephones installed in the village police cars. May 1, three full time firemen were appointed to the North Olmsted Fire Department, which allowed the department to give the village 24 hour protection. 1950 St. Richard Church was dedicated, first catholic church in North Olmsted. North Olmsted auxiliary police was formed. 1951 October 5, became a city (when population reached 5,000). North Olmsted’s first industry was opened (Sherwin Williams Company). Radio telephones were replaced by three-way radios. 1955 North Olmsted Police Department purchased its first radar set. 1957 24 full time firemen moved into the two new fire stations at east and west end of the city on Lorain Road. North Olmsted Police Department moved from a one-room office in Town Hall to the old 1929 fire station vacated by the fire department. 1958 Great Northern Shopping Center opened. North Olmsted Chamber of Commerce began. North Olmsted Exchange was formed. First full time police officer was assigned to detective duties and the department’s detective bureau was started. 1960 January 1, North Olmsted became a charter city. Full time fire department replaced volunteer department. Olmsted Historical Society was started. 1962 Briggs house moved from Stearns Road to be a part of the Frostville Museum area. 1963 Universalist Church moved to Porter Road. 1964 Dedication of the concrete stadium at the high school to seat 3100 people. 1965 Safety Town was organized and supervised by the North Olmsted Police Department. 1967 North Olmsted Rotary Club was organized. 1974 New police station was built. 1976 Completion of Great Northern Shopping Mall by Saul S. Biskind, developer. 1995 North Olmsted Fire Station No. 1 opened. 1996 North Olmsted High School boy's soccer team won division I state championship. 1998/1999 Town Hall restoration project completed. 2000 Skate park construction began September 18, 2000 to be completed November 1, 2000. Springvale ADA improvements completed. Springvale parking lot improvements project 2000. Bond rating increased to a 2 by Moody's August 28, 2000. Fitch rated North Olmsted A1. 2001 NOMBL celebrates 70 years of service to the community March 1, 2001. 2003 Construction begins on new library |
