North Olmsted residents 60 and older or with disabilities now have a versatile new transportation option to get around town.
If you live in North Olmsted, are age 60 and older or with a disability, the new Senior Transportation Connection PLUS program will provide you and your eligible loved ones with a ride to social, recreational and worship destinations in comfort.
Senior Transportation Connection (STC) is one of six programs in the U.S. selected by The National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC) to develop practical, sustainable innovations in accessible transportation. Locally, STC Plus offers independence and autonomy for adults of all ages who benefit from affordable, accessible transportation. According to Jackie Chavez Anderson, North Olmsted Senior Center Administrator, this new transportation program will have a large impact in the lives of those residents who need it most. “The mission of the Senior Center is to connect senior residents to nutrition, enrichment, education and recreation activities. This new program touches on all these areas and will make an immediate impact on our elderly and disabled citizens.”
A look at the numbers reveals the dire need for more accessible transportation options in North Olmsted: approximately 26 percent of North Olmsted residents are over age 60, and more than 1,700 working age residents live with a disabling condition, according to the 2014 U.S. Census estimates. An estimated 10,000 North Olmsted residents may need accessible transportation to fully participate in community life.
To address this critical need, the North Olmsted Senior Center was selected by STC to become a pilot program city offering evenings and weekend transportation. The new pilot program is building on existing STC resources and infrastructure that have delivered reliable, accessible transportation weekdays in North Olmsted since 2009. “It is very important for all residents to have flexible transportation options”, says Jackie. ”I am thrilled that we are able to launch this pilot program and connect residents to the arts, culture and civic events they would otherwise be missing out on.”
